This specimen was lot 2925 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $891.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 8 Reales, (1)704. Assayer H. Philip V (1700-46). Scarce date. Two bold dates. Uneven strike. FINE. Ex: Ponterio Sale# 68, This specimen was lot# 1446, April 1994." Cob eight reales were struck at the Lima mint 1701-46 for Philip V of Spain and became the "pieces of eight" of pirate lore. Specimens with legible dates bring triple those without. The fineness was lowered from .931 to .917 in 1725.
