Künker Auction 424, lot 672

This specimen was part of lot 672 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), which sold for €130 (about US$184 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · PASSAU, BISTUM Leopold Ernst von Firmian, 1763-1783. 1/4 Konv.-Taler und ein 1/8 Konv.-Taler 1764, Regensburg (?). Schaumünzen auf seine Huldigung. 2 Stück. Sehr schön-vorzüglich und sehr schön. (Germany, bishopric of Passau, Leopold Ernest of Firmian, 1763-83, quarter and eight convention thalers of 1764, possibly Regensburg mint, for the homage of the people. Two pieces, very fine or better.)"

This quarter thaler was issued for the homage of the people on the coronation of the new bishop. The SCWC mentions the silver eighth thaler (KM 84) and the quarter thaler (shown here) but not the 1½ ducat or the triple ducat. Leopold Ernst was also bishop of Seckau (1739-63) and coadjutor of Trento (1748-58) and helped emperor Joseph II establish compulsory education in the Hapsburg dominions. His uncle Leopold Anton was archbishop of Salzburg. The bishopric of Passau was annexed to Bavaria in 1803 and 1805.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: silver, this specimen 6,93 g.
