Passau 1747-D ducat Fr-2075
This specimen was lot 4034 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,624 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PASSAU, BISTUM, Joseph Dominikus von Lamberg, 1723-1761. Dukat 1747, Wien. GOLD. RR Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (bishopric of Passau, Joseph Dominic of Lamberg, 1723-61, ducat of 1747, Vienna mint. Very rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The reverse of this ducat shows a cardinal's hat over the arms, which honor was conferred on Joseph Dominikus by the pope in December 1737. Patterns exist of this design in silver, lead and tin. The bishopric was secularized in 1803 and handed over to Bavaria. The second specimen was lot 664 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,965 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · PASSAU, BISTUM Joseph Dominikus von Lamberg, 1723-1761. Dukat 1747, Wien. Brustbild r. in geistlichem Ornat, darunter die Signatur D (Stempelschneider Matthias Donner)//Vierfeldiges Familienwappen mit Mittelschild der Herren von der Leiter (della Scala), dahinter Krummstab, Kreuz und Schwert gekreuzt, oben Kardinalshut mit herabhängenden Quasten. GOLD. RR Vorzüglich. (Germany, bishopric of Passau, Joseph Domenicus of Lamberg, 1723-61, ducat of 1747, Vienna mint. Obverse: bust right in bishop's robes; reverse: quartered arms of the bishop with the escutcheon of Passau and von der Leiter under a miter, crossed crozier, cross and sword behind, cardinal's hat above. Very rare, extremely fine.)"
