Passau 1723 thaler Dav-2522
This specimen was lot 31051 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Passau. Josef Dominik Taler 1723 MS64 NGC, Regensburg mint. A tremendous representative of this admired type, showcasing an impressive amount of detail for this low relief design. Glassy fields throw glinting cabinet shades around the planchet, a light show best appreciated in person. The finest graded across certification companies. From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." This type was struck in 1723 with and without mintmaster's initials "ICB". Both are very scarce but not rare. The Bishopric of Passau, between Bavaria and Austria, struck a few thalers in the eighteenth century, all now rare. The state fell to Bavaria during the Napoleonic upheavals and is now part of Germany.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
