Passau 1716 1/4 thaler
This specimen was lot 660 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €165 (about US$234 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · PASSAU, BISTUM Raymund Ferdinand von Rabatta, 1713-1722. 1/4 Reichstaler 1716, Augsburg. Min. Glättungsspuren auf der Rückseite, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, bishopric of Passau, Raymund Ferdinand of Rabatta, 1713-22, quarter thaler of 1716, Augsburg mint. Minor smoothing on the reverse, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1716-17. The bishop spent part of his reign squabbling with the bishop of Vienna, who wanted to be raised to an archbishop. The bishopric of Passau was annexed to Bavaria in 1803 and 1805.
