Papal States 1735 giulio KM-858
This specimen was lot 1574 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,706 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Clemens XII. 1730-1740. Giulio A V/1735, Rom. Mit Brustbild auf der Vorderseite und mit A · A · A / F · F / RESTITVTVM / COMMERC / 17 - 35 und dem Wappen des Presidente della zecca, Monsieur Nicolò Casoni, auf der Rückseite. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön +. (Papal States, Clement XII, 1730-40, giulio of year 5, 1735, Rome mint, with the pope's bust on the obverse and "RESTITVTVM / COMMERC" ('commerce restored') and the arms of the mintmaster on the reverse. Extremely rare, choice very fine.)"
This date is listed in the SCWC for 1735. This type comes dated (shown here) and undated. The giulio was ten baiocchi or one tenth of a scudo. Many varieties were issued in the 1730's. Berman mentions eight different giulii with this reverse legend, some (2639, 2641, 2643, 2645) with the pope's bust and some (2640, 2642, 2644, 2646) with the pope's arms.
