Künker sale 403, lot 1476

This specimen was lot 1476 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €750 (about US$984 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST INNOCENZ XII., 1691-1700. Die Münzstätte Rom. Testone A VI/1696, Rom. Mit gerolltem Rahmen, Blattwerk und Engelskopf und dem Wappen des Presidente della zecca, Monsieur Maffeo Farsetti, auf der Rückseite. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Slg. Klaus Bronny, Auktion Münzen & Medaillen Deutschland 26, Stuttgart 2008, Nr. 506. (Papal States, Innocent XII, 1691-1700, testone of the year 6, 1696, Rome mint. With rolled frame, foliage and angel's head and the arms of the Presidente della Zecca, Monsieur Maffeo Farsetti, on the reverse. Extremely fine to uncirculated)"

Berman lists ten different testone for this pope. Many varieties also come without date; none are rare. The testone was thirty baiocchi, while the piastra, the Italian equivalent of the German thaler, was 105 baiocchi (3½ testone). The reverse motto, "ROGATE·EA/QVAE·AD·PACEM/SVNT", means "They requested peace". Another testone of 1696 (KM 594) uses this design but with a curved inscription on the reverse.
