Künker sale 403, lot 1474

This specimen was lot 1474 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$3,936 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST INNOCENZ XII., 1691-1700. Die Münzstätte Rom. Testone A V/1695, Rom. Mit dem Wappen des Presidente della zecca, Monsieur Maffeo Farsetti, auf der Rückseite. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Papal States, Innocent XII, 1691-1700, testone of the year 5, 1695, Rome mint, with the mintmaster's arms on the reverse. Cabinet example, handsome patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

Berman lists ten different testone for this pope. Many varieties also come without date; few are rare. The testone was thirty baiocchi, while the piastra, the Italian equivalent of the German thaler, was 105 baiocchi (3½ testone). The reverse motto, "ROGATE·EA/QVAE·AD·PACEM/SVNT", means "They requested peace". This type, struck year V only, depicting the pope listening to a sermon, is very scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 9,21 g.

Catalog reference: Muntoni 49; Toffanin 2147/1 (R), Ber-2252, KM 588.
