Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. This issue is among the more available and is listed for 1696 with year V (shown here) and VI. Innocent XII ruled 1691-1700. This specimen was lot 620 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €140 (about US$177 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, ETATS PONTIFICAUX, Innocent XII (1691-1700), (Antonio Pignatelli), AR piastre, an 6 (1696), Rome. Efforts de paix. D/ B. à d., vêtu de la chape. R/ PACEM LOQVETVR GENTIBVS Le pape trônant à d., entouré du consistoire. Trace de monture. Beau. (Italy, Pontifical State, Innocent XII (1691-1700), silver piastra of the year 6, Rome mint, on the peace negotiations. Obverse: draped bust to right; reverse: the pope enthroned, with his consistory. Trace of mounting, Fine.)"

Recorded mintage: unknown but a slightly better type.
