Künker sale 403, lot 1467

This specimen was lot 1467 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €600 (about US$787 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST INNOCENZ XII., 1691-1700. Die Münzstätte Rom. ½ Piastra AN VI/1697, Rom. Betender Papst auf einer Kniebank. Stempelschneider Pier Paolo Borner. Mit Wappen des Presidente della zecca, Monsieur Maffeo Farsetti, auf der Rückseite. Vorzüglich. (Papal States, Innocent XII, 1691-1700, half piastra of year 6, 1697, Rome mint. Obverse: the praying pope kneeling on a bench; reverse: mintmaster's arms. Extremely fine.)"

This type is listed in the SCWC for years VI and VII. Unlike the photo therein, this example also shows the AD date on the reverse in the exergue. The mezza piastra of 1695 used the same reverse but had a bust obverse. The mezza piastra was the least often used of the silver denominations.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 16.03 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 16,00 g.

Catalog reference: Muntoni 31; Toffanin 2138/2 (R), Ber-2238, KM 601.
