Papal States 1698 1/2 grosso
This specimen was lot 1484 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €550 (about US$722 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PAPST INNOCENZ XII., 1691-1700. Die Münzstätte Rom. ½ Grosso 1698, Rom. Mit eckigem Schild, Schlüssel mit Kordeln und Schleifen auf der Vorderseite, die Rückseite mit DA • / PAVPERI / 1698 • in Palmzweigen. Feine Tönung, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Klaus Bronny, Auktion Münzen & Medaillen Deutschland 26, Stuttgart 2008, Nr. 530. (Papal States, Innocent XII, 1691-1700, half grosso of 1698, Rome mint. With a square shield, key with cords and bows on the obverse, the reverse with DA • / PAVPERI / 1698 • in palm branches. Fine toning, extremely fine.)"
The mezzo grosso was the smallest silver coin, being one quarter of a giulio or one twelfth of a testone. The reverse motto translates as, "give to the poor".
