Künker sale 403, lot 1341

This specimen was lot 1341 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €4,000 (about US$5,249 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST SIXTUS V., 1585-1590. Die Münzstätte Ancona. Scudo d’argento A IIII/1588, Ancona. Brustbild l. in geistlichem Ornat, auf der Schulter die Jahreszahl • 1588 •, darunter • - • A • IIII •//Ansicht vom Heiligen Haus in Loreto, darüber die Heilige Jungfrau Maria mit dem Kind auf dem Arm, das Kind ohne Strahlen, unten [drei Ringe übereinander] ANCONA [drei Ringe übereinander] / • [drei Ringe übereinander] •. Von allergrößter Seltenheit. Henkelspur, fast sehr schön. (Papal States, Sixtus V, 1585-90, silver scudo of year 4, 1588, Ancona mint. Obverse: bust left in ornate robe, date by the shoulder; reverse: view of the Holy House in Loreto, above the Holy Virgin Mary with the child in her arms, the child without rays, "ANCONA" below. Extremely rare, mount mark, about very fine.)"

This is the first appearance of this type on CoinArchives whereas we see several offerings of Dav-8329 struck the same year. We're not sure if this is a scudo or a piastra; in the eighteenth century, the scudo was slightly lighter than the piastra. Loreto, in the Marches of the Papal State, is today the site of the Basilica della Santa Casa. Catholic tradition holds that the house where Joseph and Mary lived in Judea was miraculously transported to Loreto in the thirteenth century, during the Crusades.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 32.07 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 30,85 g.
