Künker sale 403, lot 1340

This specimen was lot 1340 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €24,000 (about US$31,491 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST SIXTUS V., 1585-1590. Die Münzstätte Ancona. Scudo d’oro 1586, Ancona. • SIXTVS • - • V • PON • M • Verziertes Löwenwappen, darüber ein Stern, oben gekreuzte Schlüssel mit Kordeln und Tiara zwischen zwei Sternen//ANCON [drei Ringe übereinander] DORICA [drei Ringe übereinander] CIVITAS [drei Ringe übereinander] FIDEI • 1586 • Kreuz mit Blattwerk, an den Enden je eine Rosette, in der Mitte ein kleines Kreuz mit vier Stielen an denen je ein Stern endet. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Vorzüglich. (Papal States, Sixtus V, 1585-90, gold scudo of 1586, Ancona mint. Obverse: lion arms in ornate cartouche, a star above, over all two crossed keys, a tiara and two stars; reverse: leafy cross cantonned with rosettes, a small cross in the center. Extremely rare, extremely fine.)"

The scudo d'oro (gold shield) was about 4% lighter than the ducat or zecchino. Sixtus had two scudi d'oro struck at Rome (Fr-86 and Fr-87), a scudo d'oro (Fr-353) and doppia (Fr-352) struck at Bologna and a scudo d'oro (shown here), doppia (Fr-315) and quadrupla (Fr-314) struck at Ancona. These were the last gold coins struck at Ancona.
