Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 1729

This specimen was lot 1729 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €160 (about US$217 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, ETATS PONTIFICAUX, Grégoire XIII (1572-1585), (Ugo Boncompagni), AR teston, an 10, Rome. D/ B. à g., vêtu de la chape. R/ AGGREGATA RELIGIO La Religion assise à g. devant la basilique Saint-Pierre de Rome. presque Très Beau. (Italy, Papal States, Gregory XIII, 1572-85, silver testone of the year 10, Rome mint. Obverse: bust left, dressed in a robe; reverse: Religion seated before St. Peter's basilica in Rome. about Very Fine.)"

Berman notes that this type was struck years X, XI, XIII. Silver testone are popular with collectors not only for their Catholic associations but also the extraordinarily vivid portraits of the various popes, including Gregory XIII (1572-85). The first papal piastri date from this period; a piastra was three and a half testone.
