Künker sale 403, lot 1328

This specimen was lot 1328 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,575 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST GREGOR XIII., 1572-1585. Die Münzstätte Ancona. Testone (3 Giuli) o. J. (1572-1578), Ancona. Mit Serafinenkopf und drei Punkten über dem Wappen auf der Vorderseite und den Wappenschilden des Governatore di Ancona, Cristoforo Boncompagni und des Commissario Alessandro Casali auf der Rückseite. Feine Patina, vorzüglich. (Papal States, Gregory XIII, 1572-85, undated testone or triple giulio, circa 1572-78, Ancona mint. With angel face and three dots over the arms on the obverse and the shields of the governors of Ancona on the reverse. Fine patina, extremely fine.)"

Pope Gregory is best remembered today for promulgating in 1582 the reformed calendar known as Gregorian. St. Peter is enthroned on the reverse, holding the keys to the kingdom of heaven.
