Papal States (1582)-NS testone Ber-1164
This specimen was lot 1327 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,247 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PAPST GREGOR XIII., 1572-1585. Die Münzstätte Rom. Testone (3 Giuli) A XI (1582/1583), Rom. Mit Münzzeichen NS mit Kreuz (Meo Neri e Orazio Spadio) auf der Vorderseite. R Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Papal States, Gregory XIII, 1572-85, testone or triple giulio of the year XI (1582-83), Rome mint. With the privy mark NS with cross on the obverse. Rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Pope Gregory is best remembered today for promulgating in 1582 the reformed calendar known as Gregorian. The reverse legend, SIC DECET IMPLERE, seems to be taken from Thomas Aquinas, lecture 7: "Ambrosius. Quae etiam sit dominici causa baptismatis, dominus ipse declarat, dicens: sic decet implere omnem iustitiam." ("The Lord himself declares what is the cause of Sunday baptism, saying: thus it is fitting to fulfill all righteousness.") This type is known dated years X, XI and XIII.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 9.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 9,42 g.
