This specimen was lot 32896 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $499.38. The catalog description[1] noted, "Papal States. Gregory XIII Testone ND (1572-85) MS61 NGC. Ancona mint. St. Peter standing, reverse Papal arms. With ash gray toning and champagne highlights." Silver testone are popular with collectors not only for their Catholic associations but also the extraordinarily vivid portraits of the various popes, including Gregory XIII (1572-85). The first papal piastri date from this period; a piastra was three and a half testone.
