Künker sale 403, lot 1337

This specimen was lot 1337 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €360 (about US$472 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST SIXTUS V., 1585-1590. Die Münzstätte Rom. Testone A I (1585/1586), Rom. Ohne Münzzeichen auf der Vorderseite und der Wappenschild mit zwei Putten verziert. Seltene Variante. Sehr schön. Exemplar der Slg. Klaus Bronny, Auktion Münzen & Medaillen Deutschland 26, Stuttgart 2008, Nr. 224. (Papal States, Sixtus V, 1585-90, testone of the year I (1585-86), Rome mint, without mintmark on the obverse and an escutcheon with two putti on the reverse. Rare variety, very fine.)"

The reverse legend, NVNQVAM DEFICIET ("It never fails"), alludes to the efficacy of faith as represented by the cross and the female figure of Faith. This type also comes undated.
