Steve Album sale 51, lot 3183

This specimen was lot 3183 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $204. The catalog description[1] noted, "PAPAL STATES: Sede Vacante, 1585, AE quattrino 0.55 g, ND (1585), Ancona Mint, listed in Berman as billon but appears to be bronze, very uncommon type, VF-XF." This particular sede vacante between Gregory XIII (1572-85) and Sixtus V (1585-90) lasted only two weeks in April 1585. Accordingly, there are only a few coins therefrom and this was the only issue from Ancona on the Adriatic coast.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.54 g, copper, 18 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: Berman-1305.
