Künker sale 403, lot 1359

This specimen was lot 1359 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €340 (about US$446 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST URBAN VIII., 1623-1644. Die Münzstätte Rom. Testone A VIII (1630/1631), Rom. Ohne Stempelschneidersignatur. Mit Wappen der Münzmeister Giuseppe Bonanni, Sebastiano Pagliari e Girolamo Martelli auf der Rückseite. Leichter Doppelschlag, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Papal States, Urban VIII, 1623-44, testone of the year 8, Rome mint, without engraver's signature but with the mintmaster's arms on the reverse. Lightly doubled, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type is known for years VIII and VIIII and has a moderate catalog value. Google translates "AVCTA AD METAVRVM DITIONE" as "INCREASED TO MEASUREMENT CONTROL", which we interpret to mean "Restored to the old weight standard". A testone was three giulii.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 9,45 g.
