Künker sale 403, lot 1365

This specimen was lot 1365 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €260 (about US$341 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST URBAN VIII., 1623-1644. Die Münzstätte Rom. ½ Grosso o. J., Rom. Feine Patina, kl. Randabbruch, vorzüglich. (Papal States, Urban VIII, 1623-44, undated half grosso, Rome mint. Fine patina, minor chip, extremely fine.)"

This type is listed for years III, V and VI altho the SCWC plate photo shows an undated example. Similar undated mezzi grossi include KM 108 (SS. Peter and Paul) and KM 109 (Mary standing on a crescent). The reverse legend is taken from the ancient prayer, "Sub tuum praesidium confugimus, Sancta Dei Genetrix. Nostras deprecationes ne despicias in necessitatibus, sed a periculis cunctis libera nos semper, Virgo gloriosa et benedicta. Amen." = "We fly to thy protection, O holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen." The mezzo grosso was the smallest silver coin.
