This specimen was lot 1044 in CNG sale Triton XXVII (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $1,470. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY, Papal (Papal state). Leo X. 1513-1521. AR Giulio – Leone. Macerata (or Ancona) mint. Half-length busts of St Paul, holding sword and gospel, facing right, and St. Peter, holding key and gospel, facing left, both within crescent frames above coat-of-arms surmounted by crossed keys and Papal tiara / Lion standing left, resting paw on globe, being crowned by Victory flying left. Toned, minor deposits. Good VF. Rare. From the J. Eric Engstrom Collection. Ex Christie’s Milan (29 November 2011), lot 50." Leo X was the first Medici pope and was more interested in beautifying St. Peter's than reforming the church. During his pontificate, coins were struck at Rome, Ancona, Bologna, Fabriano, Fermo, Foligno, Modena, Parma, Perugia, Pesaro, Piacenza, Ravenna, Regio Emilia and Avignon. Berman notes guilii for this reign, including Berman 638-644, 666-672, 690-691, 703-705, 711 and 716-718. The giulio was introduced by pope Julius II (1503-13), who named the new coin after himself. The giulio was one tenth of a scudo.
