Künker sale 400, lot 517

This specimen was lot 517 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €6,000 (about US$7,784 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN, KIRCHENSTAAT/VATIKAN, Leo X. 1513-1521. Fiorino di camera o. J. Rom. GOLD. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Sehr attraktives Exemplar, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Italy, Papal States, Leo X, 1513-21, undated fiorino di camera, Rome mint. Scarce in this quality, very attractive example, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The fiorino (florin) started out the same weight as the ducat or zecchino but ended up a little lighter. Friedberg records the first fiorino from 1475 and the last from the reign of Paul III (1534-49). Another well-known fiorino from this pontificate features St. Peter fishing alone (Fr-48).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.39 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.38 g.

Catalog reference: Ber-633, Fr-46; Toffanin 619/2.
