Norway 1850 1/2 specie daler
This specimen was lot 1889 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €420 (about US$569 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NORVEGE, Oscar Ier (1844-1859), AR 1/2 speciedaler, 1850. Petits coups sur la tranche. presque Très Beau. (kingdom of Norway, Oscar I, 1844-59, silver half speciedaler of 1850. Small rim nicks, about Very Fine.)"
Norway passed from Danish to Swedish rule in 1814. This type was issued by Sweden for Norway 1846-50 and 1855. A few more half specie dalers (KM 322, 328, 340) were issued under Carl XV prior to the decimal reform of 1874; all are rare.
Recorded mintage: 145,000 for 1849-50.
Specification: 14.45 g, 0.875 fine silver.
