Norway 1848 specie daler Dav-243
This specimen was lot 1237 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €24,000 (about US$26,597 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Incredible Prooflike Speciedaler with Rich Frosting and Crisp Details, NORWAY. Speciedaler, 1848. Kongsberg Mint. Oscar I. NGC MS-65 Prooflike. Mintmaster: Casper Herman Langberg. Standing as the only specimen of this date to achieve a prooflike designation from NGC, this alluring crown alights with a garish display of color that is resolutely purple at the outermost peripheries and lightens through the visible spectrum with red and orange and finally cresting in soft silver at the centers. The details are well applied, with a richness of clarity that is simply not seen on the average example of the type. A must have for any serious collector of Speciedalers."
In 1907, Norway obtained a divorce from Sweden and became an independent kingdom under a Danish prince. Even before passing under Swedish rule in 1814, Norway had enjoyed a separate coinage from Denmark. This type was struck in 1846-57. This example realized 33 times the catalog value in EF. It was struck to the Danish standard (Dav-75) rather than the larger Swedish riksdaler (Dav-354).
Recorded mintage: 80,500.
Specification: 28.89 g, 0.875 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, this specimen 28.93 g.
