Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection, lot 1197
SB924-1197r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1197 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €60,000 (about US$66,492 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Wholly Attractive Double Speciedaler, NORWAY. 2 Speciedaler, 1656. Christiania Mint. Frederik III. NGC MS-62. Mintmaster: Frederik Grüner (FG). The finest of only two privately owned examples. A further three examples are known from public collections in Denmark and Norway. A lovely rim toning on the obverse elevates the appearance with a few light contact marks on the king's chin. The reverse is awash in a wonderful silvery brilliance. Guildal acquired this superlative example from Major General Carl Thorvald Jørgensen (1819-1902), who in 1888 published a still useful reference catalog of Danish coins from 1448-1888."

This type was struck 1656-57; it varied from the prior Dav-3594 in having a smaller bust of the king inside a beaded circle. Half (KM 47), single, triple and quadruple specie dalers (Dav-A3596) were also struck in 1656.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 57.55 g, 0.875 fine silver, 46 mm diameter, this specimen 57.86 g.

Catalog reference: KM-41; Dav-3596; Hede-22; Sieg-30; NMD-43; Schou-7; Aagaard-49.3 (56-3/56-10); Bruun-9712.
