Newfoundland 1904-H 50 cents
This specimen is a slightly scarce date of a type struck in London and Birmingham for the colony of Newfoundland 1904 and 1907-09. Canada debased her silver dimes from .925 to .800 in 1920 but Newfoundland did not follow suit until 1945. Newfoundland was admitted into the Dominion of Canada in 1949 and her separate coinage ceased. As a class, Newfoundland coinage is scarcer than equivalent Canadian coinage but collector demand for it is lower so it is often cheaper. The first specimen was lot 34469 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $470. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 50 Cents, 1904-H. PCGS MS-62." The second specimen was lot 70275 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[2] noted, "CANADA. 50 Cents, 1904-H. PCGS AU-58 Secure Holder. Light handling consistent for the grade. Well struck with plenty of remaining luster and just a hint of tone."
Recorded mintage: 140,000.
