Schulman 379-613r.jpg

This specimen was lot 613 in Schulman auction 379 (Amsterdam, June 2024), where it sold for €480 (about US$617 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KONINKRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN - WILHELMINA 1890-1948. 25 Cent of kwartje. 1945, Munten door de Nederlandse regering in Amerika geslagen. Hoofd naar links. TYPE IV c (1943-1945). 'Ouder hoofd' door J. C. Wienecke. Mt. P + eikel. Te Philadelphia voor Nederland geslagen., Silver. RR. Originele muntkleur. NGC MS64. FDC. (kingdom of the Netherlands, Wilhelmina, 1890-1948, 25 cents or kwartke of 1945, struck at Philadelphia, USA, for the Netherlands, type IVc, mintmark "P" plus eagle. Very rare, original luster, graded NGC MS-64.)"

The Philadelphia mint struck these and other Dutch coins on behalf of the government-in-exile 1943-45, while the Netherlands was under Nazi occupation. The 1945's were never circulated and are today rare. Wartime inflation may have prevented their issue, as the 25 cents of 1948 was nickel.

Recorded mintage: 92,000,000 (nearly all were melted).

Specification: 3.57 g, 0.640 fine silver, 19 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM 164, Sch-1058.
