SB223-74229r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74229 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Gulden, 1944-P. Philadelphia Mint. Wilhelmina I. NGC MS-64. Variety with obverse legend below bust. A VERY ELUSIVE variety, and one that trades with comparable infrequency, this near-Gem example also adds tremendous beauty along with the variety. Strong luster dances in the light, and a touch of pretty toning highlights the surfaces. A pleasing and most impressive example that is certain to achieve many bids." The gulden was 10 g, 0.945 fine, until 1917. The later Wilhelmina type (KM 161.1) of 1922-40 was 0.720 fine. This subtype of 1944-45 was struck at the Philadelphia mint, the Utrecht mint being under Nazi occupation. When the homeland type was resumed in 1954, it was 6.5 g, 0.720 fine silver (KM 184).

Recorded mintage: 105,125,000, all varieties.

Specification: 10 g, 0.720 fine silver, 28 mm diameter, lettered edge.

Catalog reference: KM 161.1 (shown here) or KM-161.2 (NEDERLANDEN to right of neck) Sch-1055.
