This type was struck in 1984 to promote family planning. Excessive population growth has exacerbated poverty in Nepal. A regular issue fifty paisa (KM 821a) also exists for 1984. King Birendra Bir Bikram (ruled 1971-2001) was murdered by his son in a domestic dispute. The king's brother, Gyanendra, ruled until the monarchy was abolished in 2008. In 2015, an earthquake wrecked the capital, Katmandu.
