Sincona sale 43, lot 2281

This specimen was lot 2281 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$597 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALY | Modena, Francesco I d'Este, 1629-1658 15 Bolognini o. J. Sehr selten. Fast sehr schön. Kratzer. (duchy of Modena, Francis I d'Este, 1629-58, undated fifteen bolognini. Very rare, About very fine, Scratch.)"

The bolognini, or the twentieth part of a lira, was a denomination originating at the papal mint of Bologna, which issued numerous minor coins ranging from four to twenty bolognini. As six lire made a scudo, this coin was one-eighth of a scudo (Dav-4039).
