Modena (1629)-GFM ducatone Dav-4036
This specimen was lot 2629 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN Modena, Francesco I d'Este, 1629-1658. Ducatone o. J., Modena. Mit der Stempelschneidersignatur GFM (Gian Francesco Manfredi). Sehr selten. Fast vorzüglich. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (Italy, duchy of Modena, Francis I d'Este, 1629-58, undated ducaton, Modena mint, with engraver's initials GFM. Very rare, About extremely fine, Extraordinary condition.)"
This example seems to be a mule, with the large bust obverse of Dav-4036A and the stars over the ship of Dav-4036. Both are very rare. A scudo was also struck at this time (Dav-4039) with a nominal weight of 26.44 g. This specimen was offered again as lot 1991 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 5,000 CHF (about US$6,930 including buyer's fees).
