Papal States 1673 20 bolognini KM-84
This specimen was lot 602 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €80 (about US$101 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, ETATS PONTIFICAUX, Clément X (1670-1676), (Emelio Altieri), AR lira, 1673, Bologne. D/ Armoiries. R/ Lion deb. à g., ten. une bannière. presque Très Beau. (Italy, Pontifical State, Clement X (1670-76), silver lira of 1673, Bologna mint. Obverse: arms; reverse: lion to left, bearing a banner. About very fine.)"
The city of Bologna in the north of the Papal States used a different coinage than the Rome issues. This twenty bolognini or lira was roughly equal to two giulii or two-thirds of a testone. Like most of the silver issues from this locale, it is rather scarce.
Recorded mintage: unknown but available.
Specification: 6.34 g, .916 fine silver, this specimen 6,27 g.
