Modena (1598-1615) 6 bolognini
This specimen was lot 1528 in Jean Elsen sale 136 (Brussels, March 2018), where it sold for €130 (about US$191 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, MODENE, César d'Este et Virginia de Médicis (1598-1615), AR 6 bolognini. D/ Ecu orné et couronné. R/ Ecu de Médicis couronné. Rare Fines griffes. presque Très Beau. (Italy, duchy of Modena, Caesar d'Este and Virginia of Medici, 1598-1615, silver six bolognini. Obverse: crowned ornate arms; reverse: crowned arms of the Medicis. Rare, light scratches, about very fine.)"
The bolognini, or the twentieth part of a lira, was a denomination originating at the papal mint of Bologna, which issued numerous minor coins ranging from four to twenty bolognini. As six lire made a scudo, this coin was one-tenth of a scudo (Dav-4039).
