This specimen is one of a series issued by the Mexico City mint to honor heroes of the War of Independence (1810-21) and the Mexican Revolution (1910-17). The program was modeled on the U. S. Mint's state quarter program and has been quite popular. The specimen shown here, honors José Maria Morelos, who carried on the struggle against the Spanish after the death of Hidalgo. The coins are the same weight and diameter as the bimetallic five pesos issued since 1992 (KM 552).
Recorded mintage: 6,927,961 plus 4,725 proofs.
Specification: 7.07 g, bimetallic, stainless steel outer ring with an aluminum-bronze center, 25.5 mm diameter.
