This specimen was lot 72356 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $69. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Real, 1837-Go PJ. Guanajuato Mint. NGC AU Details--Tooled. Second finest of just two examples graded by NGC. Sharp strike, dark toned, attractive. Tooling refers to old scratches under toning. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Shown is an 1837-G^O PJ one real, one of a type struck at the Guanajuato mint 1825-68. Assayer PJ is recorded at this mint for the years 1834-42. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a "bit" (one eighth of a dollar), is common except in uncirculated. This is a better date of a common mint. Unlike the half real, where gem specimens turn up occasionally, one reales nearly always appear heavily circulated. The eagle shown is distinctive to the Guanajuato mint, which reverted to the standard eagle in 1843.
