Mexico 1809-Mo HJ 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 3216 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $1,380. The catalog description[1] noted, "1809 HJ 8 escudos. Mexico City mint. AU-58 (NGC). Types as above. Satiny medium gold with a high degree of lustre and a hint of orange toning on both sides. The reverse shows nearly full lustre. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This type with the imaginary bust was struck 1808-12; the succeeding type with the "standard bust" of Ferdinand VII is much scarcer even tho it was struck over a longer span of years.
