Sedwick Treasure auction 27, lot 468

This specimen was lot 468 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $892.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico City, Mexico, cob 8 reales, 1656P. Very choice full oMP and date (the latter with light tooling at the bottom of the 56), 100% full shield with old gouge at bottom, choice full cross-lions-castles, elegantly toned VF." This specimen is a silver cob eight reales struck at Mexico City 1621-65. Specimens with clear dates are unusual. In 1728, cobs were debased from .931 to 0.917 fine silver.
