Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71666
SB1122-71666r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71666 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, 1656-Mo. Mexico City Mint, Assayer P. Philip IV. PCGS VF-35. This Mexico City 4 Reales piece offers great detail despite being rather flatly struck. The obverse includes the mintmark, assayer, and full date all quite boldly. The reverse only retains half of the cross with castles and lions, but the remaining portion is clear and attractive. This piece exhibits appealing smooth surfaces with moderate gray toning. A wholesome example for the type. From the Pat Johnson Collection." The SCWC mentions this type for 1621-67 and notes 1634-65 with assayer "P". Unlike those of Bolivia, few of these early cobs have legible dates.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 12.82 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-6156, KM-38; Cal-1074.
