Mexico 1626-Mo D 8 reales
This specimen was lot 72288 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Cob 8 Reales, 1626-Mo D. Mexico City Mint. Philip IV. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Fine Details. A crudely struck Cob with full peripheral date and variable toning. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection." The regular cobs were struck for the entire length of the reign of Philip IV. Assayer D is known for 1618-34. Cayón reports a 1626/5 overdate. Round "royals" are known but all are rare, rarer than the equivalent Bolivian royals.
