Mexico 1625-Mo D 8 reales
This specimen was lot 72287 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Cob 8 Reales, 1625/4-Mo D. Mexico City Mint. Philip IV. PCGS Genuine--Salt Water Damage, VF Details. A Cob with dark gray field toning and some corrosion on the surfaces, with a clear overdate, mintmark, and assayer. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection." The regular cobs were struck for the entire length of the reign of Philip IV. Assayer D is known for 1618-34. Round "royals" are known but all are rare, rarer than the equivalent Bolivian royals. Altho this example has some nasty corrosion, its visible date earned it a handsome price realized.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 26.35 g.
