Majorca (1368-87) real de oro Fr-48
This specimen was lot 34366 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $5,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain: Mallorca. Pedro III (1336-1387) gold Real d'Oro ND (1368-1387) MS63 NGC. Conch shell mintmark. James Eimeric as mintmaster. +:PЄTRuS: DЄI: GRACIA: RЄX (double saltire stops, with double annulet stop at the end of the legend), crowned figure of Pedro seated facing, royal orb in left hand, scepter in right, conch shell to left, all within tressure with annulet flanked trefoils in spandrels / +:ARAGOnum: ЄT | mAIORICARum: (double rosette stops), patriarchal cross within tressure, rosettes in arches, conch shell to either side, pellets in spandrels. Only the second example of this very conditionally sensitive and typically low-grade type we have offered. While that coin was graded a technical 2 points finer than the present specimen, the two generally possess a similar striking quality. Despite the piece we formerly offered having heavier obverse die polish, this coin still omits any evidence of wear and major friction, and shows almost no doubling in the strike. From the GK Collection." This ruler also issued half, quarter and eighth reales in gold.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.51 g, gold, this specimen 3.63 g.
