Aureo y Calicó sale 423, lot 1309

This specimen was lot 1309 in Aureo y Calicó sale 423 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 900 € (about US$1,165 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Jaume III of Mallorca (1324-1343). Mallorca. Ral. Very rare. MBC+ [choice very fine]." Cayón lists a one real for Jaime II (Cayón-2038) but not for Jaime III. Jaime III became king of Mallorca in 1324 at the age of nine but lost his throne to Pedro of Aragon in 1343. He was killed in battle in 1349 at the age of 34 attempting to reclaim his crown. Local issues for Mallorca dwindled after Ferdinand of Aragon's death in 1516 but appeared occasionally until the War of the Spanish Succession (1700-15).
