SB1123-74604r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74604 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Mallorca. Dinero, ND (1324-43). James III. PCGS AU-58. Obverse: REX MAIORICARUM, front-facing portrait; Reverse: IACOBUS DEI GRA, long cross. A handsome example, displaying a notable lack of the corrosion often present on these hammered billon types, the surfaces toned to some depth and conveying the barest evidence of circulation atop the highest points of the design." Jaime III became king of Mallorca in 1324 at the age of nine but lost his throne to Pedro of Aragon in 1343. He was killed in battle in 1349 at the age of 34 attempting to reclaim his crown. This dinero (diner in the local dialect) is attributed to him along with a quarter real, a dobler and a malla.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: billon.
