SB126-41013r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41013 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Mallorca. 1/8 Real de Oro, ND (1336-87). Mallorca Mint. Peter I (Peter IV of Aragon). NGC MS-63. Obverse: Pedro seated facing on throne, holding orb and lis-tipped scepter, all within beaded circle; Reverse: Patriarchal cross; scallop to left, all within beaded circle. This diminutive denomination is overshadowed by its larger lookalike, the more commonly encountered Real de Oro, but is a RARITY of its own right within the Spanish gold series. The condition of the present example is far above the pale, the strike bold and exacting, with handsome surfaces that are dressed in a handsome blanket of reddish patina. A singular opportunity to acquire a premium example of this charming and elusive type." This ruler issued many coins ranging from a real de oro down to a billon diner (half a dobler). The Balearic islands were not reconquered from the Moslems until 1229-32. Aragon's possession of them allowed the dynasty to dominate the western Mediterranean. Spain would not be unified until Ferdinand of Aragon married Isabella of Castile and sent Columbus to discover America.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: gold, this specimen 0.49 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-51, Cayón-2068.
