Künker sale 263, lot 992
Wertheim in 1789

This specimen was lot 992 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €4,000 (about US$5,167 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LÖWENSTEIN-WERTHEIM-ROCHEFORT, GRAFSCHAFT, Johann Theodor, 1611-1644. Reichstaler 1623, Cugnon. Sehr schön. (Germany, county of Lowenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort, John Theodore, 1611-44, thaler of 1623, Cugnon mint. Very fine.)"

This is one of a few rare thalers of the seventeenth century from this insignificant locale wedged between Mainz and Wurzburg. In 1635, the county was partitioned between Lowenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort and Lowenstein-Wertheim-Virneberg.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-6909; Wibel 171, KM 18.
