This specimen was lot 1148 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it sold for €8,000 (about US$10,444 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"CUGNON, Jean Théodore de Löwenstein (1611-1644), AR rixthaler, 1624. D/ B. cuir. à d. R/ Ecu couronné à huit quartiers, dans un cartouche orné. Extrêmement rare Légère fin de plaque. Très Beau. (county of Cugnon, John Theodore of Lowenstein, 1611-44, silver rixdollar of 1624. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: crowned arms in an ornate cartouche. Extremely rare, light planchet clip, Very Fine.)"

This is one of a few rare thalers of the seventeenth century from this insignificant locale wedged between Mainz and Wurzburg. In 1635, the county was partitioned between Lowenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort and Lowenstein-Wertheim-Virneberg.

Reported Mintage: unknown but few.
