Künker sale 263, lot 852

This specimen was lot 852 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €290 (about US$375 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankfurt, STADT Reichstaler 1623, mit Titel Ferdinands II. Sehr schön. (Germany, city of Frankfurt, thaler of 1623, in the name of Ferdinand II, very fine.)"

The early 1620's saw an explosion of thaler issues as princes hired soldiers and bought weapons at the beginning of the Thirty Years War. This type is listed for 1623-24 but very similar thalers (Dav-5281, -5289 thru -5299), were issued from Frankfurt throughout the seventeenth century.
