Wertheim in 1789

This specimen was lot 983 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €600 (about US$809 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LÖWENSTEIN, LÖWENSTEIN-WERTHEIM-ROCHEFORT, GRAFSCHAFT, Karl Thomas, 1735-1789. Konv.-Taler 1769, Wertheim. Äußerst seltene Variante. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich/vorzüglich. (Germany, county of Lowenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort, Charles Thomas, 1735-89, convention thaler of 1769, Wertheim mint. Extremely rare variety. Attractive example with fine patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This otherwise insignificant principality issued a series of thalers in 1766-69 (Dav-2402 thru -2408B). It was mediatized in 1806 and partitioned between Baden and Bavaria.

Recorded mintage: unknown but very scarce.
