Kunker sale 293, lot 978
Wertheim in 1789

This specimen was lot 978 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,887 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LÖWENSTEIN, LÖWENSTEIN-WERTHEIM-VIRNEBURG, GRAFSCHAFT, Friedrich Ludwig, 1731-1796. 1/2 Konv.-Taler 1770, Wertheim. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön. (Germany, county of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Virneberg, Frederick Louis, 1731-96, half convention thaler of 1770, Wertheim mint. Very rare, very fine.)"

This otherwise insignificant principality issued a series of thalers in 1766-69 (Dav-2402 thru -2408B). It was mediatized in 1806 and partitioned between Baden and Bavaria.

Recorded mintage: unknown but very scarce.
